I have been taking two tablespoonfuls of extra virgin coconut oil orally. I also apply it to my face and hair, for insect bites and skin rashes.

Alternative medicine

My doctor, who specializes in alternative medicine, has compared it to Lorenzo's oil.

We should rediscover the uses of this oil the way our ancestors used it for thousands of years.

Clinical studies have shown that coconut oil has anti-microbial and anti-viral properties.

It is now being used in the treatment of AIDS. Studies conducted here show that coconut oil does indeed reduce the viral load in AIDS patients.

Today, it is even used in Ayurvedic medicine. Modern medicine has recently confirmed the many health benefits traditionally attributed to this oil.

Its saturated fat is unlike the fat found in meat and vegetables. It is identical to a special group of fats found in human breast milk that has been shown to improve digestion, and protect against bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Sports drinks use it to enhance athletic performance.

Management

Virgin coconut oil is used for the management of digestive disorders such as Crohn's disease (a chronic inflammatory disease of the lower intestinal tract), irritable bowel syndrome, and colitis (inflammation of the colon). It is also a powerful agent against intestinal parasites.

Even thyroid sufferers find that virgin coconut oil boosts metabolism. Research also shows that it may be effective against fungal infections of the mouth and vagina.

Another amazing fact is that even though virgin coconut oil is a form of fat, it actually promotes weight loss.

In summary, virgin coconut oil has antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal properties. How much virgin coconut oil should one consume? A good therapeutic dosage is three to four tablespoons a day. This provides enough lauric acid to strengthen the immune system. So, look for extra virgin coconut oil that is food grade, and stay away from all hydrogenated oils.
